Frieda (Darras) Coil, 90, passed away peacefully January 8, 2018, having lived a life full of zestful energy and connection with neighbors, friends, family, and church community. 

Born in Chicago to a close-knit family created by Greek immigrant parents, Frieda (Aphrodite) thoroughly enjoyed city life, and later lovingly made Grand Rapids her home for nearly 50 years. Frieda had a confident, strong spirit, and was a natural leader. She worked in the education field as Kentwood Public Schools Administration Staff, and volunteered in the Forest Hills District. Frieda was a devoted church member, serving her Greek Orthodox Church Family as parish treasurer, and member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society; she thoroughly enjoyed working on communal church projects such as the annual luncheon and Calder festival, and served the wider GR community at God’s Kitchen for several years. Until recently Frieda was a regular at the church Tuesday Group Fellowship, and treasured her long-held relationships there.

She is survived by James Coil, her husband of 60 years, daughter Paula, son Greg, and granddaughter Natalie. Frieda’s brother Bill, sister Lucille, and many nephews, niece, and their families remain to remember her.

All services will take place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 330 Lakeside Drive NE, Grand Rapids. Visitation on Thursday, January 11, from 2-4 & 6-8pm, with Trisagion Prayers read at 7pm. Friday funeral services will begin at 11am, with visitation one hour beforehand.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frieda’s memory to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
