Mary Estelle Brunner’s grand adventure came to a peaceful close Tuesday as she rejoins the love of her life, Frank. Born February 21, 1935, in Detroit and raised on the east side of the state, Mary Jones graduated from Dearborn High School, and moved on to Ohio University, where she met and fell in love with Army First Lieutenant Frank Brunner. Their marriage on December 26, 1953, set in motion a life filled with activity including their love of travel across Europe, the U.S. and the Caribbean. After settling in Grand Rapids, Mary and Frank built their life together in the classic sense of the 1950’s and 60’s in the Midwest. Along with doing volunteer work in the community, Mary was a fabulous Bridge player, and she loved hosting the other young mothers and homemakers in the neighborhood where they laughed, gossiped, and explored ways to raise good children and build good marriages. Mary’s lifelong habit of reading focused on her interest in the WWII era of America’s history, and was informed by her pride in Frank’s experience as an American patriot serving in the Korean War. She avidly followed current events, and kept up daily with the latest news. While Frank built a successful career in sales, this handsome couple raised – and are survived by – two daughters, Lisa (Tom) Myers and Bridget (Joel) Adkins as well as her beloved grandchildren, Charlie Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Richard Johnson, and Kayleigh Johnson. After Frank passed away in 2011, Mary valued the companionship of her dog, Poncho. Her family is consoled by their vision of Frank and Mary, together again.
