The Reverend Dr. John G. Hanington, aged 83 of Grand Rapids formerly of Stevensville, MI passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Juanita; stepmother, Evelyn; brother, Robert; son, Douglas. John is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Margaret; children, David (Maddy) Hanington, Michele (Dan) LaPrad, Amandalynn (Jon) Vandermolen, John (Ann) Bell; grandchildren, Brandon, Joshua, MaKayla, Makenna, Andrew, Jennifer and Natalie; great grandchild, Sailor Getz; sister, Sue Alloway; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind special friends, Marvin Trepus of Waco, TX and Rev. Morris Ball of Columbia, MO.
John served in Presbyterian Campus Ministry in Kirksville, MO and Columbia, MO, and the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Mexico, MO. He was a member of Lake Michigan Presbytery and served several congregations in Illinois, Missouri and Michigan, primarily in pastoral care and counselling before retiring after 52 years of faithful service. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War in both Japan and Guam. John was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation of Tahlequah, OK.
A Celebration of Life officiated by Rev. Todd Petty will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 11 am at 1st Park Congregational Church, 10 E Park Pl NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Family will greet friends 1 hour prior to the service.
