Lorna Jean Smith (Coleman)
Lorna Jean Smith, age 87, passed away November 26, 2019 at Blodgett Hospital. Lorna was born in East Grand Rapids on July 9, 1932 to Howard Coleman and Marguerite Coleman. She graduated from South High School in 1950 and went to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. as a switchboard operator, becoming a supervisor. In 1954, Lorna wed Allan L. Smith and shared nearly 50 years of marriage. In Lorna’s words, “We did everything together." Allan preceded her in death in 2004. They are survived by their children, David Smith and Barbara Hewitt (Greg); grandchildren, Andrew Hewitt, Deanna Knoff (Mike), Natalie Hewitt, and Martin Hewitt (Emma Duvernay); nieces, Vicky Waite and Karen Waite.
Lorna enjoyed an active life and will be remembered for her kindness and warm personality. She appreciated her friends at First United Methodist Church where she served for special events and on the “Hotline” bulletin. She also served her city with the RSVP volunteers and was employed as a crossing guard near her Grand Rapids neighborhood. Lorna retired to Westminster Meadows in Grand Rapids and later to Fountain View of Lowell.
A Service of Remembrance will be held December 26, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Fountain View of Lowell, 11537 Fulton Street East in Lowell.
