Morris Boogaart Obituary

Morris (Morrie) Boogaart of Grand Rapids Michigan, aged 93, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 at Cambridge Manor in Grandville. He is preceded in death by his wife Donna (Cornelisse), his youngest son, Russell and his son-in-law Thomas Lauters. He is survived by his sister-in-law Barbara (Cornelisse) Brummel, his sons; Doug (Kathie), Craig (Marilyn), Steve (Lois), Randy (Judy), his daughter Karen Lauters, and daughter-in-law Cheryl; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He proudly served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his return he supported his family as owner of Bergsma Bakery and in later years as custodian for Third Reformed Church in Grand Rapids.

In 2016 Morrie famously became known as the "Hat Man" through the publication of Spectrum Health Beat and TV broadcasts of Channel 17 and "Our Michigan Life" Channel 13. His "servant heart" carried over into his golden years by making thousands of winter hats for the homeless which he continued until his final days.

In keeping with his final wishes, a private burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Cambridge Manor (151 Port Sheldon, Grandville 49418) and Spectrum Health Hospice (750 Fuller Ave., NE, Grand Rapids 49503) for their dedicated and loving care. Memorial donations may be given to either organization.
