Sue Harvey, born September 9, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed into God’s Hands on October 14, 2019, after a very brief illness.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Fred Harvey; daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Tom Purkiss; grandchildren, Mason and Jill Purkiss; sisters, Linda (Glenn) Conrad; and Kathy (Joe) Lenhart; her beloved Aunt, Sister Maureen Donovan; nieces and nephew Tammy Gill, David Conrad, and Melissa Kovach.
Sue left high school at age 17 after the birth of her daughter, Angie. A few years later she went on to continue her studies and received her nursing degree from Grand Rapids Community College. She became a public health nurse for Kent County, MI, working at the Lead Poison Clinic and STD Clinic. She transitioned from her nursing career to begin working for the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office in the Victim Witness unit. She was a fierce fighter for abused women.
After retiring in 2002, she volunteered for the Grand Rapids Public Library, Vanbelkum branch for many years, and was active in a number of community organizations. Sue was a neighborhood advocate and volunteer for the Friends of Riverside Park and the Creston Neighborhood Association.
She was always ready and willing to do her part to speak for the disadvantaged and marginalized; and to be a voice of reason, the calm in the storm. Above all she was highly intelligent, open-minded, curious, non-judgmental and a life long learner.
Sue treated ALL people with compassion and respect and lived her life to make a positive impact wherever she was. She was an amazing success in her life’s goals and helped countless people in our community over the years.
As per Sue’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services.
A Celebration of Sue’s life will take place Saturday afternoon, November 2, from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm, at English Hills Country Club, 1200 4 Mile Rd. NW, Grand Rapids, MI, 49544
