Velma Ruth (Dertien) Straka

Straka, Velma R (Ruth Porter), aged 89, of Grand Rapids, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 24, 2019. She was preceded in death by husbands, Arthur Holden Porter and  Joseph John Straka; daughter, Patricia Ann (Tom) Soentgen; parents, John and Dena Dertien; sisters, Delores Porter and Rosie (Bob) Piers. brothers Jack and John Dertien.

Velma is survived by her children, Arlene Porter, Doug (Carol) Porter, Dan Porter, Don (Kim) Porter, Jim (Holly) Porter, Art (Barb) Porter, Kris (Tim) Leys; dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren; step children, Joe (Regina) Straka, Cindy (Mike) Thompson; brother in law, Aaron Porter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Velma Ruth was born to John and Dena Dertien on March 13, 1930.  Velma and her sisters Dee and Rosie traveled through west Michigan singing and playing at local churches.  During this time, she met Art Porter on a blind date and together they had 8 children.  Velma was an active member in the church and enjoyed the ladies Bible study group.  Velma always looked forward to summer so she could spend time camping.  In 1977, her husband Art passed away after a short illness.  Several years later she met and married Joe Straka in Ormand Beach Florida.  She enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family and friends, crocheting blankets for many of her grandchildren, reminiscing and telling stories.

There will be a visitation for Velma, Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 4-7 PM at Memorial Alternatives, 2432 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI. Her Funeral Service will take place Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Blythefield CRC, 6350 Kuttshill, Dr. NE, Rockford, MI 49341. Family will greet friends, one hour prior to the service.
