Albert Allen Smith Jr., 81, of Cascade Township (Grand Rapids), Michigan passed on Saturday February 3, 2018. Al was the first and only child born to Blanche Louise (Woolford) Smith and Albert Allen Smith Sr., on August 17, 1936 at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan.
After an extraordinarily adventurous youth in Detroit, Michigan, Al grew into a loving husband, dedicated and highly involved father as well as an outstanding leader and provider. He was married for 51 years to his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Marian (Lovachy) Smith, until her passing in 2008.
In between his children’s practices and games, Al managed a life-long and successful career with Procter & Gamble. He is survived by his three children Rebecca (Lyle Sweeney) Smith, Lisa (Bill) Keller, and Allen (Jenevieve) Smith. His legacy includes thirteen grandchildren: Anastasia (Paul) Myers, John Allen Kanzlemar, Sarah (Darren) Murray, Nicholas Albert Kanzlemar, Christiana Lovachy-Smith Sweeney, Christopher (Jenny Hung) Keller, Victoria Marian Keller, Elizabeth (Matt) Moore, Catherine Smith, Margaret Smith, Marian Smith, Jadyn Smith and Allen Smith, IV. He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Hannah Kanzlemar, Mila Kanzelmar, Liara Kanzlemar, Graham Myers, Georgia Mae Smith-Maddox, and Marian Iris Moore. Al also leaves behind his beautiful partner, Jane Ogilvie, who brought him love and joy in his later years, sister-in-laws, Christine (Lovachy) Neff, and Georgia (Lovachy) Klask, as well as many nieces and nephews, and friends.
To his family, Al was the G.O.A.T: Greatest Of All Time. A gifted athlete in his youth, accomplished businessman in adulthood, he was always the consummate story-teller with an unparalleled wit and a brilliant eye for detail. Al had a bold presence that filled the room with great warmth. If you were fortunate enough to know Al, you surely knew of his charisma. If you were fortunate enough to be in Al’s life, you surely felt that you were special, because to him you were. May Al’s soul forever dwell in heaven, just as his memory and love forever lives in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 Fulton St. Grand Rapids, Michigan. Donations in Albert’s memory can be made to the Whitecaps Community Foundation, 4500 W. River Dr. NE, Box 428, Comstock Park, MI 49321
