Alice Rikans Obituary

Alice Rikans, 76, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024, after bravely battling liver cancer for the last five years. She fought until the very last moment and was finally given a reprieve and called home while surrounded by her devoted husband and two daughters.

Alice was born on November 22, 1947, in Noord Scharwaude, The Netherlands. She immigrated to the United States with her family and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1956. However, she never forgot where she came from and a semblance of her heritage can be found in every room of her house including tulips, Delft pottery, a vintage Dutch wall clock, numerous porcelain Dutch row houses, and an immense collection of the Dutch Santa Claus himself; Sinterklaas.  She was also an avid crafter and there was no craft skill she did not have; from cross stitching to crocheting to sewing to scrapbooking to gnome making, she was immensely talented.  Alice and her immediate family also enjoyed an immense love for the great Mickey Mouse, and she loved visiting Walt Disney World with her family as much as she could and truly enjoyed experiencing all the Mouse had to offer when experiencing it with her Grandson on his first few trips.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents; Alice, and Andrew Groot, her brothers; Case Groot and John Groot, as well as her brother-in-law; Tim Schoen.

She is survived by her husband; John Rikans, her daughter; Tricia Rikans, her daughter and daughter-in-law; Jennifer, and Tiffany Cribbs, her grandson; John Benton Cribbs, as well as her fur babies; Kahlua and Bailey, and her grand-fur babies; Wall-E, Sampson, and Thor.  Alice is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law; Nick and Sally Groot, sister; Agnes Schoen, sister-in-law; Rose Groot, sister and brother-in-law; Jane and Paul Esch, brother-in-law; Gary Jones, sister; Linda Kaminski, sister and brother-in-law; Mary and Ken Kieras, sister; Liz Groot, as well as a plethora of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your favorite dog and/or animal rescue, as that was something Alice was passionate about.

It is very hard to lose people we thought would never leave. But, we will be okay because we have no choice. When we lose people we love, we must find a way to keep going for the people we still have.
