Berta Jane (Kimmel) Dykhuis

Berta Jane Dykhuis, aged 100, a lifelong Grand Rapids resident, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2021, with her family at her side.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Roger F. Dykhuis, parents, Lester & Lila Kimmel, siblings, Raymond (Jeanne) Kimmel, and Winona “Toddy” (G. Richard) Johnston.  Berta is survived by her children, Nancy & Robert Slade, Cindy & Tim Leonard, Dan & Theresa Dykhuis; grandchildren, Shane & Anne, Brooke & Adam, Sarah & Brian, Randy & Lisa, Steven & Samantha; great grandchildren, Jordyn, Sienna, William, Vivien, Aurelia, and Freddie; brother, Moe (+Marilyn) Kimmel, sister Susan (Jack) Lake, and many nieces & nephews. 

Berta enjoyed each of her roles in life:  wife, mother, friend, Sunday school teacher, Camp Fire leader, Church Historian, Executive Secretary, and Grand Rapids Public Museum docent.  Her most beloved roles were as Grandma and Gigi.  Berta was also an avid amateur artist; she painted treasured oil portraits of all her grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Second Congregational UCC, 525 Cheshire Dr. NE, Grand Rapids, MI.  Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, memorial contributions can be given to the Outreach Trust Fund of Second Congregational UCC, Emmanuel Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
