Betty Stanton Obituary

Betty Jane Stanton, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, January 8th, 2025 at St. Ann’s rest home, Grand Rapids. 

Betty was born January 25th,1931 to her parents Andrew and Nellie Barlow in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She graduated from Kelloggsville High School in 1949. The following year she married Thomas Stanton of Caledonia. They were married 43 years until his death in 1993. She raised her six children on the Michigan State University Graham Station farm.  She worked as a cashier at D&W food stores located in Breton Village and Caledonia after the children had left home.  She enjoyed traveling with her sister Lila Zuidersma to Aruba many times. One of her favorite trips was aboard the QEII ocean liner to England with her sister-in-law Peggy Gallagher.  Mom also spent time in Charlevoix on yearly summer vacations. Fort Myers, Florida was a favorite winter getaway to stay with her son Michael and his family. Mom drove down to Florida with her sister Pat Ver Sluis each spring for many years.  Playing cards and watching birds on feeders built by sons John and Joe were also favorite pastimes.

Betty is survived by her children Tom (Sandy) Stanton, John (Nancy) Stanton, Joe (Dawn) Stanton, Mike Stanton, Laura (Pat) Burns, and Bill Stanton.  Eight grandchildren, Tom (Katie) Stanton, Kendra (Scott) St. Antoine, Tim (Laura) Stanton, Joey (Lauren) Stanton, John Michael (Meghan) Stanton, Jessi (Cory) Knape, Chad Stanton, and Billy Ignatti. Two step grandchildren, Angie (Joey) Russo and Adam Parsons.

Twenty great grandchildren, Tommy and Abby Stanton; Benny, Gabe, and Lucy Stanton; Luc, Jonah, and Justin St. Antoine; Isaiah, Ellis, and Scarlett Stanton; Jane and Lucy Stanton; Paige, Colton, and Lilly Knape; Stella, Viviana, Rosa, and Giulietta Russo.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 17th, 2025 at 1:00 PM St Ann’s home, 2161 Leonard St NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49504.  The family will greet visitors one hour prior starting at 12:00 noon. A luncheon will be held at St Ann’s after the service.
