Doreen Elda Buttermore of Grand Rapids, a loving and much-loved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother passed away peacefully on April 7, 2021 at age 82. Born in 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Doreen moved to Grand Rapids in 1957 to attend the Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated, becoming an RN in 1959. Joining Butterworth’s staff after graduation, Doreen eventually rose to operating room nursing supervisor. Doreen left Butterworth to raise daughter Jill and son Richard, and returned to nursing in private practices, working until the 1990s.
Doreen loved sports, staying active throughout her life, enjoying bowling, racquetball, softball, volleyball, and golf. She enjoyed spending time at the family cabin, which was built by her father. She also enjoyed gardening, word puzzles, spending time with her granddaughter Jacklyn, and coffee with friends and family. An avid sports fan, she particularly enjoyed watching the Tigers and Red Wings.
Friends and family will remember her sense of humor and “Doreen-isms”. One long-running funny family story came from when Doreen took the kids outside after a snowfall to shovel the driveway. Once the kids were busy shoveling, she cleverly announced her contribution to the effort: “I’ll get the hot chocolate started.” Despite working for hours tending her garden, she would joke, “I like to start slow and taper off.” Great memories and her sense of humor will be the strength of her legacy.
Our beloved wife, mother, “Nonna”, sister, and friend will be greatly missed by all those who love her and appreciate the impact she had on our lives.
Doreen is survived by husband Dale, daughter Jill (Ron) Whitcomb, son Richard (Wendy) Buttermore, granddaughter Jacklyn Whitcomb and sister Dorrance Behl. Doreen is predeceased by her father and mother Richard and Ida (McLean) White.
Cremation and burial has taken place.
