Dorothy Van Der Laan went to be with the Lord on May 17, 2021 at age 93. Born on a farm in Jenison to parents Menno & Jennie (Rillema) Van Singel, she was the youngest of nine children. She was preceded in death by her husband Julius (Juke), granddaughter Dodies Rogers, son-in-law Donald Rogers, and son-in-law Jorge Inchauste. She is survived by her children, Viola Rogers, Lillian Inchauste (James), Amy Young, (Jeff), son Julius (Juke) Van Der Laan II (Jackie), nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In 1945 she met and married her beloved husband Julius. They were married for 53 years. Dorothy lived in Grandville for over 70 years where her home served as a gathering place for family and friends. She enjoyed the “Saturday morning get-togethers” where she would entertain friends, neighbours, and relatives for coffee and brunch.
She was a lifetime member of the Grandville First Reformed Church; as a child, her family would commute via horse-drawn wagon from their farm in Jenison. On occasions when the Van Singel family was running late, the pastor would delay the service until her family arrived.
Dorothy was a very loving daughter who took her father, Menno Van Singel, into her home during his twilight years. She was a caring grandmother who enjoyed spoiling her grandkids with her famous chocolate chip cookies.
Dorothy will be remembered for her warm smile and spirit of giving. She was a thoughtful and considerate person who valued family and friends. She will be never forgotten by all who were touched by her kindness.
