Douglas Fergen was born on August 8, 1965 in Parkston, South Dakota to Joseph and Joan Fergen. He graduated from Parkston High School in 1983 and graduated from Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a degree in music education. After college, he moved to Michigan and worked as a organist and choir director for churches in Saginaw and Manistee, where he met his future wife. He married Kathleen Konicki on July 12, 1998 at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Grand Rapids, MI and they made their home in Dorr, MI. Doug loved music and played the trumpet, guitar, piano and pipe organ. He loved to garden and enjoyed spending time with family and friends when he visited South Dakota. He also loved a good joke and his laughter could be heard. Doug also deeply loved his Catholic faith, which was part of his life from childhood. After spending many years struggling with illness he lost the battle on April 20, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, brother Charles Fergen, sister-in-law Christy Fergen and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Joan Fergen, brother Robert Fergen, several aunts, uncles, cousins and many beloved pets. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on April 29, 2026 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Grand Rapids, MI at 11:00 am with visitation at the church one hour before the Mass. Burial will be at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the Meijer Heart Center staff for the care they provided for Doug during his time there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Rehoboth Oaks Memory Care Home or the Allegan County animal shelter.
