Dr. Frank Gould Obituary

Dr. Frank R. Gould, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and highly respected urologist, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 84.

Born on April 4, 1941, in St. Charles, Michigan, Frank was the son of Isabelle M. (Dease) Gould and William H. M. Gould. From a young age, he exhibited the intelligence, leadership, and quiet strength that would come to define his life.

Frank attended Albion College on an athletic scholarship, where he served as the starting quarterback for the Britons, leading them to multiple MIAA conference championships. His accomplishments on the field were matched by his academic excellence—he was named the 1963 Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Detroit Free Press, received the Albion College Fellow Award, and was later inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He continued his education at the University of Michigan Medical School, earning his medical degree and specializing in Urology. He completed his residency in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in 1975 joined Urology Associates of Grand Rapids, where he practiced medicine for 27 years. Known for his clinical skill and compassionate approach, Dr. Gould made a lasting impact on his patients and colleagues alike.

From 1969 to 1972, Frank served his country with honor as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, earning the Army Certificate of Achievement during his service as a Surgeon General.

Upon retiring from medical practice, he and his wife relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where he enjoyed the tranquility of fly fishing, the camaraderie of golf, and the beauty of the desert landscape.

Frank is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pamela Nicolls Gould; daughter Shelley Gould Volkert and her husband R. Scott Volkert; son Chad Gould and his wife Jennifer Knapp Gould; and six cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabelle and William Gould.

A private family memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Albion College Fund in honor of Dr. Gould’s enduring connection to the institution that helped shape his life and values.

Dr. Frank R. Gould lived a life of integrity, dedication, and deep compassion. His legacy as a physician, soldier, teammate, mentor, and family man endures in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
