Edward Matusak (Ed Buchanan, Uncle Buck) Obituary

Edward Stephen Matusak (“Uncle Buck” Buchanan), age 69, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2018.

Born on November 6, 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was proud to be a lifelong resident of the city.  Ed is survived by his long time girlfriend, Kitty Fitzgerald; his stepson, Chris Mullins; his brother Mike (Sandi) Matusak; niece Lynn (Jacob) Goldberg; nephew Tim Matusak; several cousins and numerous close friends, including the dear and infamous “Ogres”.  He is also survived by Kitty’s family: Sharon (George) Aulbach, Max Aulbach, Josephine Aulbach; Peg (Bob) Spykerman. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Leone (Pavlock) Matusak.

After graduating from Catholic Central he started studying Accounting at Ferris State University, but quickly fell in love with radio.  He later attended Grand Valley State College for 4 years and was hired by GVSC two years later to teach broadcasting classes. Ed started his radio career with WLAV in 1970 and stayed there until 1979 when he moved to WCUZ for 16 years. In 1995, Uncle Buck returned to WLAV for the remainder of his radio career. Along with his many mornings on the radio waves of WLAV, he was also well known for “The Ed Buchanan Comedy Hour” and more recently  “Breakfast in the Basement” where he spent Sunday mornings highlighting Michigan artists and sharing his music knowledge with listeners. He loved finding new talent and helping them get noticed.

Aside from radio and music, Ed enjoyed gardening, reading, Detroit Tigers Baseball and playing as much golf as possible.

According to Ed’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made in Ed’s name to the Humane Society of West Michigan.
