Evelyn Margaret (Vollmer) Miller, 4/21/1938 – 2/4/2023, of Grand Rapids, age 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on February 4, 2023. Evelyn grew up in East Grand Rapids. As a child, she contracted polio and spent a year at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital learning how to walk again. Evelyn was a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School (Class of 1956). After graduation, she took a position as a keypunch operator at the Meijer offices on the corner of Michigan Street and Fuller Avenue. During the summer of 1963, she met the love of her life, Donald B. Miller, at Trinity United Methodist Church. They were married at the church the following year, on November 14, 1964. Evelyn was always involved with her children’s love for sports and spent countless hours chauffeuring them to practices and cheering them on at every game. She remained very active with her church throughout her life, always baking for various functions, as well as volunteering in the church office. In addition, she faithfully helped run The Chatterbox Café at Clark Retirement Home every Thursday morning for many years. She loved the numerous camping trips the family enjoyed together throughout Michigan and was especially fond of Hartwick Pines State Park. She loved being in the pines and enjoyed the peacefulness of Northern Michigan. In addition to overcoming polio as a young girl, she fought and beat breast cancer later in life. Her Irish and German heritage made her a tenacious fighter against so many odds. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anne Vollmer, sister Anne Price and brother Joseph Vollmer. She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Donald; children Carolyn (Diane Huhn) Miller and Robert (Nicole) Miller, and grandson Francis; brother Terry Vollmer; several loving nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. A celebration of life will take place on March 25, 2023, at 11:00 AM (light lunch to follow) at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1100 Lake Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, she would’ve loved for those to be Trinity United Methodist Church’s Music Program and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
