Gregory Thomas Obituary

Gregory A. Thomas of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of 55 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.

Though Greg presented a tough exterior, those who knew him well discovered a tender heart and deep loyalty to the people he loved.  While he did not always express it easily, he cared deeply and loved wholeheartedly.

He took his role as a big brother seriously - never missing the opportunity to properly annoy his little sister, while also maintaining a deep sense of protectiveness for her.  Greg loved his nephews and truly enjoyed hearing about their adventures and was deeply proud of the young men they are becoming.  He was also an animal lover, often times finding himself drawn to them more than people.  He especially enjoyed turtles, squirrels, parakeets, and snakes.

Greg will be remembered for his love of music - usually played loud - with heavy metal among his favorite genres.  He also loved muscle cars, dirt bikes, and BMX bikes, particularly a shiny red Kuwahara that he gifted and "ungifted" to his nephew countless times, as he could never quite part with it.  He remained a kid at heart and continued to enjoy many of his childhood pastimes throughout his life.

Greg will be lovingly missed by his sister Jill (Nick Ratajczak), and nephews Jackson, Collin, and Simon Ratajczak.  Also missing his companionship is Skizzer the snapper turtle.  He is additionally survived by his Aunt Nancy (James) Roberts.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Rigney, grandparents AJ and Colleen Reynolds, and his Aunt Marjorie Reynolds.

Greg’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the team at Corewell Health Hospice for their compassionate care.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan.

Cremation has taken place, and a private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.

“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.  Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.” - Anonymous
