Harvey Pflug Obituary

Harvey Clayton Pflug, 74, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, went to heaven on February 17, 2024 after a battle with Alzheimer's dementia.  Harvey was born August 25th, 1949 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to Clayton and Ruth Pflug. He graduated from Riverside HS in 1967 and is remembered for being an excellent student in the top five of his class and the drum major for the Panthers marching band. He received a BA in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University in 1971. While at Penn State Harvey attended Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) meetings.

Upon completion of Harvey’s time at Penn State he considered an offer from the major aerospace manufacturer McDonnell Douglas (Boeing). Ultimately, he was so compelled by the vision of Cru that he declined their offer and began his work in campus ministry with Cru.

Harvey wrote about being “captured with the cause--to lead a worldwide revolution for Christ.” He was instrumental in leading many to Christ through his intentional conversations and life on life discipleship. Eternity captured his heart and compelled him to share with as many people as he had the opportunity to about his Savior, Jesus Christ.

He met Jennifer Atkinson while at staff training in Arrowhead Springs, California in 1971. They began a long-distance courtship while Harvey was working at the University of Connecticut. They married in August of 1973 and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past August.

Harvey and Jenny served for 30+ years in ministry with Cru. He served in various leadership roles in administration with Cru and Athletes in Action.

While doing ministry with Cru in Arrowhead Springs, CA he studied at the International School of Theology (ISOT) and became ordained through the Evangelical Free Church.

In 2003 Harvey transitioned to pastoral work at Faith Church in Milford, OH. He served as an associate pastor there until his semi-retirement in 2016. At this point he transitioned to Grand Rapids, Michigan to serve as a part time District Superintendent for the Evangelical Free Church of America.

Harvey also wrote: “I have never fashioned myself as a big evangelist. My efforts in that regard have been to try to do what I could to move people toward the Savior. Being involved in discipling others and teaching the importance of passing on what they know–finding their Timothys- these are the most important things in being a person of influence for Christ. Whatever else you do, do this.”

Harvey was a loving, devoted husband, gentle and intentional father, humble servant leader, faithful friend, beloved brother, favorite son, as well as a silly and entertaining grandpa.  He was predeceased by his loving wife Jennifer: his parents Clayton and Ruth Pflug and sister Beverly Minett. He is survived by his 3 children Daniel (and Amy) Pflug, Emily (and Joel) Penner, Timothy (and Lindsay) Pflug; his 8 grandchildren Madison, Ella, Jacob, Sydney, Caleb, Anderson, Bennett, Evelyn; and his sister Sandra Sprinker (Bob) of Beaver Falls, PA.
