James J. Gorman

It is with great sadness, but with endless gratitude for a life lived to the fullest, that we announce the passing of James (Jim) John Gorman on June 23, 2026, just five days prior to his 80th birthday after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic and liver cancers. Jim was born to Patrick and Hazel (Wert) Gorman of Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 28, 1946.

Jim was a fun-loving, vibrant soul who was always out having a good time and making sure everyone around him was doing the same. He touched the lives of many with his profound sense of humor, warmth, creativity, curiosity, disarming wit, and huge heart.

Professionally, Jim was a highly respected CPA and Business Valuation Expert, but his true passion was found at the easel. An accomplished artist and lifelong painter, he created treasures for family and friends, capturing the beauty of the world mainly through landscapes. Most recently, he could be found participating in various art fairs throughout Michigan with his wife Julie. Jim found great joy in connecting with people over his artwork, sharing stories, and leaving a trail of laughter wherever he went.

Jim was a true outdoorsman who found great joy in nature. He loved nothing more than camping, fishing, hunting and practicing archery with his family and friends. Jim also took to the trails and open roads as a marathon runner and cyclist. Jim embraced the outdoors with his whole heart.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Chic (Mary) Caha and Patricia Cameron, and his brother Joseph Gorman.

Jim’s legacy of love and laughter lives on through his devoted wife of 17 years, Julie (Gross); sister Issy (Tom) Aley; his daughter, Jenica VanderMark; his son, Patrick Gorman; and his cherished grandchildren, Cauy VanderMark (Bailey Gilliam) and Abrielle VanderMark (Alizzer Lim). Jim shared a deep and special bond with his in-laws, the Gross/Chalker family, who embraced him as one of their own. He also leaves behind several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, a vast circle of special friends and two beloved Brittany pups.

As a dedicated, long-time member and passionate volunteer of Grand Valley Artists, Jim requested that, in honor of his creative spirit, donations be made in his name to GVA (2661 29th Street SE, Suite B, Grand Rapids, MI 49512 or online at grandvalleyartists.org/donate).

A private Celebration of Life was held on June 28, 2026—what would have been his 80th birthday—where the family raised a glass, shared fond memories, and celebrated a man who truly knew how to enjoy the ride.
