James Guinn Obituary

James “Jim” Robert Guinn born May 15, 1952 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, peacefully passed away on September 19, 2024 supported by his loved ones.

Jim is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Hudsonville, his children, Amy, Becca, Kate, Jared, Draven, Nick, grandson Jeffrey and foster son Tevin. He is also survived by his sister Jean, brothers Bill and Ted, multiple extended family members, and his dogs, Ty and Peach.

A kindhearted and generous man, Jim was always doing for others. He was a foster parent for thirty plus years and knew the value of being a good listener and mentor, and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. He was a natural teacher and always willing to share his knowledge with others to help them grow. His legacy as a leader lives on in those lives he touched along his journey.

He loved time with his family and enjoyed making big breakfasts for everyone on Sundays and holidays. Sunday family dinners and afternoon football games were always cherished events. Jim liked the outdoors and shared that with his family. When his children were young, he enjoyed going on day trips to Lake Michigan, road trips to Florida and sledding at Johnson Park followed by hot chocolate at McDonalds. He also enjoyed just being at home, spending time surrounded by the people who made him happy.

He was passionate about his career as a small business owner of the Pennzoil 10-Minute Oil Change in Standale where he enjoyed working with his son, grandson, employees and interacting with the public. Jim loved to greet and chat with customers while his team provided their auto services.

Jim’s career sparked a lifelong interest in racing. He sponsored several racers before deciding to build his own team. At only 8 years old, son, Jared, began his career as the Team Guinn driver. Through the years, various cars and tracks, racing was always central to Jim’s interests. He loved the energy of being in the pit, talking cars with his track friends and above all, treasured spending time with his boys and cheering on his team.

Jim was an avid sportsman enjoying all manner of hunting, especially small game and bird hunting with his dogs.  Since the early 1990’s, he always looked forward to his hunting trips to Iowa where he would meet up with good friends and family to participate in bird hunting tournaments and camaraderie. Through the years, Jim began to include his family on trips attending tournaments throughout the Midwest states making many honored memories.

An open house celebrating his life will be held on November 9, 2024, at The Vanderlaan Room at Hager Park, 8212 28th Avenue, Georgetown Township, MI 49428. Friends and loved ones will be received between 2-6pm for a social gathering and refreshments.
