James Udell Obituary

James Gilman Udell, age 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 23, 2024.

James, or Jim as he was known to family and friends, was born on January 23, 1937 in Belding, Michigan. and was adopted by John Leroy and Irene Udell. He Spent most of his childhood in Ionia where he enjoyed playing the saxophone and spending time with his cousins on their farm, as well as working in his mother's restaurant. Some of his fondest memories were road trips across the country with his parents, volunteering at the Ionia Free Fare as a young man, and visiting state parks.

 He graduated from Michigan State University with his Bachelor’s degree in Education and his Master’s degree in Reading. He continued to love all things Michigan State and frequently attended sports events in person as well as supported them through their televised games. He taught elementary school as well as Sunday school for many years, and enjoyed camping and visiting places like Williamsburg and Gettysburg, as well as Niagara Falls.  

A loving father, he delighted in attending anything his children were involved in, including concerts, ballets, the theater, and school games.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Corinne (Pipe), and three children Stephanie (Scott) Thompson; Lisa (Dan) Bos, and Christopher (Takako) Udell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Seth Thompson, Lena Thompson, Elijah Thompson, Grace Bos, Kyra Bos, Noah Udell, and Lucas Udell.

A private family interment will be held at a later date.
