Joan Gay Hunter, 80, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 11, 2023. Joan was born on December 30, 1942, to John and Viora Bergs, in Grand Rapids.
Prolific and self-taught, Joan devoted her life to creative expression. She excelled at several media, including china painting, watercolor, acrylics, jewelry, clay, and textile arts. No aspect of her life was untouched by her artistry, as Joan took every opportunity to transform a mundane object into something beautiful through her brushes and paints. Having grown up on the Grand River, she found tremendous inspiration in nature, which featured predominantly in her artwork. Joan also loved dancing, gardening, music and games. She was a lighthearted and kind soul, always marching to her own drumbeat, seizing the day, and letting positivity be her guide.
Joan was predeceased by her brothers John, Bill, and Bobby. She is survived by her children Channon, Jon, Holly, and Tara, her grandchildren Brandon, Chelsea, Zachary, and Cleo, her sister Val, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Furthermore, she leaves behind her companion Dale, and countless artists and dancers she was fortunate to call friends.
