John Lee Bitson of Grand Rapids, proud veteran of the US Marine Corp, entered the kingdom of heaven peacefully at the age of 74 on Monday March 25, 2024.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children John D. Bitson, Allen (Sydra) Bitson and Stacy (Robert) Nickelson; grandchildren Mackenzie, Peyton (Jeana), Brendan (Madison), Camden, Jordyn (Lucas), Irelynn, Marissa, Ethan (Abigail) and Frank; great grandchildren Emersynn, Beau, Mae, Mila, Owen, Noah, Na’kyah and Forester and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife of forty-seven years, Flora May Bitson; parents Edward L. Bitson Sr. and Madeline (Max) Lunsford; brothers Mason (Diane) Bitson and Edward L. Bitson Jr.
John was a veteran of the Vietnam War. For his service, he was awarded a Purple Heart. He served honorably in the Marines, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. Later in life he also served in the Army National Guard.
John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved sports and took pride in watching his grandchildren play their sports of choice. He loved rooting on the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers. John worked the majority of his life as a general laborer for a manufacturer and spent several years volunteering with his local Boy Scout Troop and Little League. John enjoyed feeding his “pet” squirrels, bingo and bowling. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 10th at Memorial Alternatives located at 2432 Fuller Ave NE Grand Rapids Michigan 49505 from 6pm to 8pm.
