Joseph Surman Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Surman, age 60, passed away on February 8, 2026, surrounded by those closest to him, after a short but valiant battle with Stage IV lung cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Ruby Surman, and infant sisters Mary and Mary Kay.

Joe is survived by his children, Nicholas Surman and Emily (Nathan) Schmidt; his sisters, Colleen, Lisa, and Kathy; his girlfriend, Cathy VanderMeer; and many nieces and nephews.

A graduate of West Catholic High School, Class of 1983, Joe spent much of his career working in tool and die, where he was a respected mentor to many. Later, he worked at Baldwin Bait & Tackle, where he happily shared his extensive knowledge and passion for fishing. He found his greatest pride in his children and his greatest peace in nature—especially along the Muskegon River and at Gifford Lake.

Joe will be lovingly remembered for his courage, kindness, sincerity, lively personality, and sense of humor. He loved fly fishing, dogs, his Jeep, concerts, Blue Moon, cutting his wood slabs, and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Lions and Tigers. His big bear hugs will be deeply missed.

A visitation  will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Alternatives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In Joe’s memory, donations may be made to the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly or the American Lung Association.
