CLAYTON – Joanne G Clayton, aged 91, of the Grand Rapids area, went to be with her Lord
November 8, 2022. She was born in 1931 in Georgetown, Kentucky, graduated from Georgetown College, and received her masters from Western Michigan University in
Communications. She came to Michigan with her husband, James L Clayton, in 1958 to teach
English in the Grand Rapids Public Schools. She furthered her distinguished career at Davenport
College (now University) as an English teacher, and then the Department Head, for Interpersonal Communications for over 30 years. Jo Clayton served alongside her husband taking an active role in starting several new churches in Michigan and Florida. She is survived by her children James, Jr., and Elizabeth Clayton of Jenison, MI; Pete Wilhoite of
Georgetown, KY; J Ben and Dawn Clayton of Lenexa, KS; Julie and Gregg Snell of Lawrence, KS;
Beth Clayton of Comstock Park, MI; and Winnie and Ken Parker of Altoona, WI. She has twelve
grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Joanne is preceded in death by her husband James L Clayton and daughter Cathy Jo Wilhoite, wife of Pete Wilhoite. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November19, 2022, at 11 am at Plainfield Christian Church at 7255 Pine Island Drive. The family will receive visitors from 10 am to 11 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Plainfield Christian Church.
