Julia R. (Brown) Johnson

Julia "Julie" Rose Johnson, age 86, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026.

Julie was born in Gary, Indiana, and spent much of her life serving others in the Grand Rapids community. She was married to James C. Johnson. She is survived by her brother, Sidney Castor (Polly), her seven children: Cinda DeBolt, Mari Price (Gene), Michael Fine (Jill), Thomas Fine (Lisa), Charron Groover (Randy), Malisa Murphy, and Ross Johnson.
Known affectionately as "Mimi," Julie treasured her family. She leaves behind fifteen beloved grandchildren along with many great-grandchildren and the joy of welcoming a great-great-grandchild into the family. Her love extended across generations, and each member of her family knew they were loved.

Julie dedicated her professional life to helping others succeed. She served for many years at Grand Rapids Community College, where she was Registrar and Dean of Continuing Education. Her commitment to education opened doors for countless students pursuing their dreams. She later continued her life's work as Director of Dwelling Place in Grand Rapids, where she passionately advocated for those experiencing homelessness and those in need. Her compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on the Grand Rapids community.

Outside of her career, Julie embraced life with enthusiasm. She was an avid collector of giraffes, amassing a collection of more than 500 paintings, figurines, and pieces of artwork that brought her endless joy. She was a fiercely competitive euchre player, an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Cubs and Grand Rapids Griffins hockey, and she loved her two dogs, music, dancing, and gathering with family. Julie attended Fountain Street Church, where her values of compassion, acceptance, and service were reflected throughout her life.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff on the fourth floor at Raybrook Manor of Holland Home for the exceptional care, compassion, and kindness they showed Julie. They treated her with dignity, love, and grace, making "Ju-Ju" feel like a queen. We are especially grateful for the support and comfort they provided during the final days of her life. Julie's children are planning a Celebration of Life for family and close friends. Details will be shared with loved ones.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial contributions may be made to the Julie Johnson Scholarship Fund at Grand Rapids Community College to continue her legacy of helping others pursue an education.
