Katherine Crouch

Katherine “Katy” Crouch passed away on October 17, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan

after 57 years of love and joy. She is survived by her parents, Edward C. Crouch and Elizabeth G. Crouch; Fredrick P. Behm, her devoted companion of 31 years;  her adoring aunts and uncle, and three loving cousins.

Throughout her life, Katy was eager to travel with her parents to Mexico, France, England and Italy. She also delighted in annual Florida vacations and weekend excursions to Stoney Lake, Michigan with Fred.

After graduating from high school, Katy worked in dining services and waited tables at Porter Hills Retirement Community for 21 years. Always sociable and engaging, she made beautiful friendships with residents and staff.

From an early age, Katy loved books, museum trips and concerts. Later, her unrelenting desire to “go to college” led to the creation of Noorthoek Academy, a partnership program with Grand Rapids Community College. Katy was the catalyst for the first program of its kind in the country to offer a college experience in the arts and sciences for adults with special needs. She went on to earn an Honorary Associate of Arts Degree based on Continuing Education Units, and continued to develop her talents in poetry and photography.

Katy participated in a variety of community services, volunteering at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park; assisting at the Aquinas College Day Care Center, and the YMCA Generations Child Development Center; and helping at the Community Food Club.

Katy left a loving and lasting impression on everyone she knew. She will be deeply missed by all. A memorial service will be planned for the spring.
