Kathleen Mc Comb Obituary

McComb, Kathleen (Kay) (Simons) age 100 passed peacefully in her sleep the morning of July 31, 2022 at Vista Springs Northview Assisted Living in Grand Rapids Michigan. Kathleen Jessie Simons was born November 24, 1921 to mother Mary Balfour Simons and father Frederick Simons in Columbus Twp., St. Clair Co., MI. Kay was the youngest of five children, Ethel, Gordon, Dorothy and Malcolm, and grew up at the family farm on Fred Moore Hwy in St. Clair Co., MI. Kay attended school in St. Clair Co., Michigan and received her teaching degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State Normal College in 1943.

She met the love of her life, James D McComb near Marine City Michigan and they married in February of 1945. Most of her teaching career was spent at Godfrey Elementary School in Wyoming, MI where she taught Kindergarten/1st grade until she retired in 1986. She enjoyed her summers off traveling in Michigan with Jim, going on camping/fishing trips with family, reading and visiting family and friends along the St. Clair River where she attended the annual Muhlitner Family Reunion on the 4th Sunday in June every year. After Jim passed in 1974 she made many new friends and was a wonderful “Grandma Kay” to Shawn, Jamie and Ryan and great grandson Shawn Jr. spending time with them doing one of her favorite things – going to yard sales among many other activities. She traveled to all 50 states and Ireland and has a refrigerator magnet and postcards from each to prove it. Kay was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma (DK) for many years after retirement. She had many friends that she enjoyed visiting and playing cards with through the years. She attended Faith United Methodist Church from 1974 until 2011 when she finally had to give up the keys to her beloved car. She loved being a part of many social activities while a resident at the Villa Maria in Grand Rapids including the Red Hat Society, line dancing and chair aerobics. When her health began to dictate her needs she moved briefly to Lincoln Square in Grand Rapids in 2019 and finally in 2020 to Vista Springs during the pandemic. She was an avid lifelong reader and especially enjoyed receiving books and calls from her niece, Jill Catullo of Roswell, GA. Kay was also fortunate enough to have a very special, dedicated and caring friend in Betty Morse for many decades who visited her weekly until the last few days of her life.

Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be taken to Algonac, MI and placed with her husband, Jim, by members of her family.

In addition to her parents Kathleen was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, her husband James D. McComb, son Ronald Malcom McComb, and grandson Shawn  McComb. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten by son Kim and his wife, Mary, grandson James (Jamie) and his wife Colleen and great grandson Aiden; grandson Ryan and his wife Kathryn and great grandchildren Cameron and Grace, great grandson Shawn Jr. and great, great grandson Shawn the 3rd; many nieces and nephews living in Michigan, Georgia and Florida and very dear friend Betty Morse.
