Mark Pietrusza

Mark Gerard Pietrusza, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully at home after a prolonged illness on Dec. 5, 2022. He was born June 23, 1956, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Dresslar) Pietrusza. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Steve Pietrusza and sister Mary Pietrusza) McIntyre. Mark is survived by his devoted wife, Dawn (Wingate) Pietrusza; his daughter Rachel Pietrusza, son Mark Mathew Pietrusza and step-daughter Christina Meloy; his grandchildren, Hannah, Haley, Zachary McAndrews, Landon Pietrusza, Caleb Karas, and Trevor Kamphuis; his siblings Paul Pietrusza, Laura (Pietrusza) Myles, Emily (Pietrusza) Swick, Michaeline Pietrusza (Al Brott), and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mark graduated from Union High School, class of 1974 and worked at Grand Rapids Public Schools in the Supply Department and delivered to area schools. In his earlier life he enjoyed camping and golfing and was a fan of the Three Stooges. He was lifelong supporter of the Detroit Lions and Tigers.

Mark was a 17-year member of the Sons of the American Legion Northeastern 459 and a former Squadron Commander. He enjoyed honoring veterans, whether it was flagging the graves or grilling food for them and others at their various events. He particularly enjoyed visiting Wilwin Lodge with his Legion buddies.  He made many friends there and truly enjoyed the camaraderie of the many members, particularly after he retired.

Mark met his wife Dawn at the 459 Legion thru a mutual friend, where she was also an Auxiliary Member. They enjoyed taking trips to Mackinac City and Sault Ste. Marie and made a point to visit the “Legion.” They enjoyed time with their grandchildren. They both volunteered for Pulaski Days, making his specialty, potato pancakes.

Mark was known for his great sense of humor and generosity. Mark loved animals, especially dogs.  He loved his family & friends.

At Marks request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 1-5p.m. at the American Legion Northeastern Post 459, 658 Michigan St NE, Grand Rapids, MI.
