Michael Fettig Obituary

Michael Edward Fettig, 70, of Ada, Michigan passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer.  He was born on December 14, 1949 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Robert and Jalene Fettig.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and former wife, Baiba Fettig.

Michael served his country in the U.S. Army as Sergeant during the Vietnam Conflict with 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile serving from 1968 to 1970.  During his time of service, Michael received numerous decorations, medals and commendations.  Among them were the Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal, and bars for sharpshooter and marksman.

After his service, Michael attended Ferris State University and then worked for decades for his father’s foreign car repair business, Seaway Garages, in Muskegon, Michigan.  Other positions Michael held were managing a General Motors dealership in Lakeview and being a Logistics Manager for Mast Greenhouses in Walker.  Michael was also active for many years volunteering for the Jaycees in Fremont, giving back to his community.

Always one to have a project that he enjoyed, “Life with Mike” was always an adventure.  Each day could have involved cutting down trees and splitting wood, building a shed addition, building retaining walls or anything else that struck his fancy. He was always busy with a project and could fix anything and work circles around anyone else.  He enjoyed antiquing, auctions and going to flea markets, always on the lookout for the bargain of the day.  He loved his collection of import cars and enjoyed working and maintaining them in his barn and workshop.  He was an avid golfer and loved golfing with Monique at several different golf courses across the state.  Michael loved to camp and enjoyed nothing more than cooking over an open fire next to his travel trailer.  He was completely at home in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking, baking, and was a master griller.  He could make anything for any special event.  He loved working on his house and spending time with family and friends.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Monique; children Heath Fettig, Jeremy (Robin) Fettig, Mary  (Larry) Bassett, Rebecca (Tony) Tovar, and Mark (Rose) Fettig; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; brother Allan (Marge) Fettig; sister Jayne (Alan) Mathews; Lorna Fettig, first wife and mother of the children; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many special friends.
