Rachel Anderson Obituary

Rachel Meriby Anderson (41) died on the morning of May 13, 2025, after many complications stemming from her glioblastoma. Rachel despised writing a biography, so it’s fitting that this time she won’t have to. But she had a point: how do you distill Rachel to a few short sentences? She was a mother who cared deeply for her two children, Ariadne Virginia Anderson Nordyke (12) and Margot Adeline Anderson Nordyke (9). But that is insufficient.

Rachel was a researcher and teacher. She took the task of having children as an opportunity to raise children with intentionality, love, and mutual respect. She did not see her children as extensions of herself to mold, but as their own unique selves that she could work with to cultivate. Rachel was devoted to her wife Danielle Saoirse Nordyke (43). She took her sacramental vow as an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to wrestle with preconceptions. Rachel was the salt of this world, and when she interacted with people they came away challenged, sometimes frustrated, but ultimately changed. Rachel was the kind of person who refined those around her into more perfect versions of themselves. She was a staunch advocate and ally for those that found injustice in this world. She loved the idea of homemaking and made her home into one that was centered on one thing, hospitality. She was a great and adventurous cook that shared her talent with everyone she could.

Rachel was an amateur genealogist, and as such, here are the biographical facts for genealogical purposes. She was born on June 9, 1983, in Renton, WA, the daughter of Barbara Ellen Anderson (nee Boston) and William John Anderson. She is survived by her parents Barbara and William; her wife, Danielle; her children, Ariadne and Margot; sister Elizabeth Lakin (nee Anderson) (husband Dan, children Harvey, Juniper, Andy); brothers Luke Anderson (wife Karen, children Natalynn, Audrey) and Aaron Anderson (wife Autumn); half-sister, Amanda; and too many friends to name individually, all of whom will carry her memory into the future in both the stories they tell and the actions they take. She graduated from Sault High School, received a degree in History from Cornerstone University, did post-graduate work in Sociology at Michigan State, and was working on an MLIS at Wayne State at the time of her diagnosis.

A memorial mass and interment will be held at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, MI on June 14, 2025, at 2:00pm, with a reception for all to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, invite your friends over for dinner.  And if you find yourself in a position to give monetarily, a gofundme was set up for Rachel’s family here, https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-danielle-nordykes-family-in-their-time-of-grief

Above all else Rachel loved a project, and befitting those she took on in this world, life is another that she will leave unfinished.
