On October 7, 2025, Richard “Dick” Hamacher was called home at the age of 79. The youngest of seven children born to Marcella and Walter Hamacher in 1945, Dick was a lifelong resident of Kent County. He graduated from Sparta High School in 1964 and Northern Michigan University in 1968. An avid and tireless entrepreneur, he owned and operated Kavis Mask in Wyoming, Michigan, until his retirement in 2013. He approached his work with passion and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on customers and employees, whom he cared for deeply. In his retirement, he enjoyed many years of volunteering to pack lunches with Kids Food Basket in Grand Rapids.
Dick’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 55 years, Pat Hamacher, and a loving father to his daughters Christine (John) Tucker and Lisa (Chris) Poturalski. He was delighted in being “Grumpy” to his three grandchildren, Meghan Tucker, Caroline Tucker, and Kellan Poturalski, as well as “Uncle Dick” to numerous nieces and nephews.
His wit, humor, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his sense of humor never faded. He was known to share pieces of valuable advice like “don’t forget to learn to learn”, and he regularly told his sons-in-law and nephews to remember two words, “Yes, Dear.”
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 245 Carrier Street NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan. As Dick enjoyed a good party, friends and family are invited for lunch, friendship, and reminiscing at Diamond Hall, 435 Diamond Ave N, Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 11:30 am-2:00 pm. The family will be dressed to honor Dick in their favorite jeans, plaid or flannel shirts, and sweatshirts. They invite guests to do the same.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Kid’s Food Basket, Memorial/Tribute Page, or checks can be made payable to Kid’s Food Basket and include In Memory of Dick Hamacher on the Memo Line.
