Richard was born May 23, 1939 in Saginaw, Michigan to Marvin and Elizabeth (Huber) Scherzer. Richard graduated in 1957 with the first graduating class at Frankenmuth High School, and from there he went on to serve his country in the Navy. He was initially stationed in Cuba before transferring to Grand Rapids. His post-naval career began at the Camera Center before working for over 35 years at Blodgett Hospital as an Orthopedic Medical Photographer and Research Assistant for Dr. Alfred Swanson.
Richard loved the Lord and was an involved member of the church, serving in many areas. He and Sonja have volunteered for many years at God's Helping Hands of Mecosta County. A native of Frankenmuth, he was raised in a rural community, an influence which led him to specialize in nature photography, starting at the age of eight. As a photographer, he photographed many weddings, produced videos, and created many beautiful photographs. He joined the Camera Club in 1964, where he was president for 2 years and earned many awards for his photos. He also enjoyed painting, drawing, and dabbling in wood carving. Richard also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.
Per Richards's request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Chapel of the Lakes, located at 9407 90th Ave, Mecosta MI 49332. Family will greet visitors at 10:00 am with the service beginning at 11:00 am. Luncheon at the church to follow.
