Robert Lee Lewis, son of the late Albert and Gladys (Hoxie) Lewis passed away peacefully on Friday, October 12, 2018 in Grand Rapids, MI at the age of 86. Robert was born on January 24, 1932 in Saginaw, MI. He married Charlotte Itter on October 10, 1960 and they spent 58 years enjoying their life together.
Robert was a 1950 graduate of Saginaw High School and served in the US Army for 2 years during the Korean War. After the Army, Robert had a long and successful career with General Motors, retiring in 1992.
Robert was a generous, supportive and dedicated husband, father & grandfather. He was passionate about spending time with his loved ones, especially his treasured granddaughters, Whitney & Tia Hawkes. He loved playing golf and passed his love of the game along to his daughter, Kay. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Red Wings and never missed a televised Detroit Tiger baseball game. His family knows he will continue to watch from “Heaven’s ultimate skybox.”
Robert is survived by his wife Charlotte, daughter & son-in-law Kay and Michael Hawkes, granddaughters Whitney & Tia Hawkes, son Andrew Lewis, his brothers and sister and their spouses; Gordon (Carol) Lewis, Nancy (Jack) Sheets and Will (Marsha) Lewis. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Maxine (Arthur) Watt, Jean (Lans) Owen, his brothers Roy (Welma) Lewis, Donald (Mary Ann) Lewis, Albert (Karen) Lewis and son Robert M. Lewis.
Though saddened by his passing, we are grateful that he passed peacefully and comfortably surrounded by his family. Robert was an exceptional man that was truly loved and will be missed dearly.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1120 4 Mile RD NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49525; Father Tom Page officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at Long Lake Cemetery in Traverse City at a private graveside service in the spring.
