Robert James Simmons

September 22, 1935 ~ July 23, 2020 (age 84)

Simmons, Robert 9/22/1935 - 7/23/2020 Grand Rapids Robert (Bob) Simmons passed away peacefully Thursday morning July 23rd, 2020. He was surrounded in his last moments with those who truly loved him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Marjorie, and grandson Chad. Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His brother, Ken Simmons , will miss the brotherly, tight knit bond they shared.

Bob will be remembered for his unique wit, belly laughs, raised eyebrows and love of family. Bob met his lifelong partner and the love of his life Joyce (Kowalczyk) when they stood up for a relative's wedding together nearly sixty-five years ago and were married for sixty-one wonderful years and countless memories. The couple has three children; Greg (Colleen), Jamie (Brenda) and Terri (Tom) Kelly. Bob loved supporting his grandchildren more than anything. Whether it be at a volleyball match, a band concert or a graduation ceremony, he took immense pride in them all. Steven, Lauren, Katelyn, Justin, Danny, and Emma all meant the world to him, and they miss his interesting solutions to problems, breakfasts after sleepovers, and back scratches already.

Bob loved many things in this life. He was an avid golfer for many years, an excellent woodworker and took great pride in keeping a pristine lawn. He made an angry pot of chili whose recipe could simply not be written down and enjoyed teasing his family about it. Bob will truly be missed in his neighborhood. Nicknamed "The Mayor" because of his vantage point on the street, watchful eye, and friendliness to neighbor and neighbor pups alike, if someone had a question or needed something taken care of, Bob was the man to ask. He was a particular man in many ways, all of which now feel like a void in the lives of his family. From his obsessive labeling of everything, to redoing word searches many times, to placing a coaster atop his coffee cup whenever it sat on the table, these things that made Dad truly Dad, and Grandpa truly Grandpa, are the things we slowly see ourselves begin to miss, but will not soon forget.

Bob fought hard and courageously against his unfair share of health issues and disease, especially these last few years. Even up until the very end, he held himself with courage and strength in spite of his body failing him and was able to share his last moments with his loved ones, a blessing those who remain are truly grateful for.

His family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the staffs at Mary Free Bed, Spectrum Health and Spectrum Hospice for their loving care of our dad and grandpa. A private graveside service will be held for immediate family and a memorial mass will be planned to celebrate Bob's life when it is safe to do so.

His family and friends already miss him very much and cannot wait until we hear him say once again, "Oh no, not you again!" with the smile that warms our hearts and makes the world just a little more okay.
