Ruth Mary (Paz) Garcia

Ruth Mary Garcia (Paz), age 66, of Hastings Michigan, passed away peacefully at her home on November 20, 2019, surrounded by husband, daughters and grandchildren.

Ruth Mary was born on August 2, 1953 to Juana Mery Muñoz and Arturo Paz, in Jamundi Valle, Colombia, S.A. She was raised by her mother, Juana Mery, and her step-father, Guillermo Muñoz.

 
Ruth married the love of her life, Braulio Antonio Garcia, in 1969. The couple lived in Colombia until they migrated to the United States in 1981.

Ruth was a devoted mother and wife who cared more for family than for herself. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Braulio Antonio Garcia, and daughters, Martha (Tim) McKay and Ines (Justin) Straube; grandchildren Joshua (Kelsey) Garcia, Tiffany Smith, Kali (Jerry) Willavize, Trista Straube, Kenneth Smith; and great granddaughter, Amelia Garcia.

Ruth is preceded in death by her loving sister, Gloria Hernandez, father, Arturo Paz, and step-father Guillermo Muñoz.

Ruth is survived by her mother, Juana Mery Muñoz; sisters, Fabiola (David) Byrne, Aura Ines (Michael) Heinz; brothers Guillermo (Darcy) Muñoz, Pedro (Maria Elena) Muñoz, Gerardo (Rosa) Muñoz, German Muñoz, Alberto Muñoz, and Oswaldo Muñoz; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth spent more than 35 years in the United States where she and her husband built a legacy through their restaurant, Antonio’s Mexican Restaurant in Battle Creek, Michigan. This restaurant provided for three generations of the Garcia family, and created a family business of 22 years for the community.

Ruth was known for her great sense of humor, her fantastic sense of holiday decor, the beautiful gardens she grew at home, and always bringing light to every room she entered. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of life will be hosted by the family on June 28, 2020 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, at the Leason Sharpe Hall  231 S. Broadway Ave, Hastings, Michigan.
