Sterling Edwin “Ned” Zimmerman Jr. Age 75
Born in Baltimore on 5/20/44, son of the late Beverly (Harrison) Zimmerman and Dr. Sterling Edwin Zimmerman, Ned was raised in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He was the older brother of Barbara (Tim Jolly), Marian, and Janet (Bob Wolfing.) He and Susan (Mann) were married for 49 years, after having been set up on a blind date. Ned’s daughters are Debbie & Laurie, and he was “Poppy” to Ana & Lucas. He died in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 9/8/19.
Ned was educated at the Severn School, Williams College, and Cornell University. He and Susan joined the Peace Corps and lived in Chile from 1968-1971. He served the City of Grand Rapids in the City Planning and Economic Development departments, followed by years in his own development consulting company.
Ned was a Tenor and Baritone in the Shubert Male Chorus for 35 years. He was a dedicated member of the Calvin-Giddings Patriotic Association organizing the Hollyhock Lane Parade for 40 years. He belonged to All Souls Community Church for close to two decades. Ned was a lifelong birdwatcher and lover of nature. Many other titles were held by Ned over the years: “Captain Sofa,” “Office of Trivial Information,” “Bank of Dad,” “Nedly.” Friend.
A memorial service, followed by light refreshments (chocolate), will be held at:
