Steven VanValkenburg, age 72, passed away at Spectrum Heart Center on January 8, 2022.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His grandchildren meant everything to him. He was a Viet Nam veteran from August, 1970 to June 1972. He served with the 101st Infantry and Military Police during his service. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2011, and was a life member of VFW Post 702 in Wyoming, MI for over 35 years, where he was very active with veterans and was their Quartermaster for many years. He was a volunteer at Grand Rapids Home for Veterans for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Sonya VanValkenburg of 53 years; his children Stephanie Dunn (Forrest), Russell VanValkenburg (Sarah), and Josh Wiser; Grandchildren Brayden VanValkenburg, Logan VanValkenburg, Isabelle Wiser, and Oliver Wiser; brothers James VanValkenburg (Candace) and Thomas VanValkenburg; sisters in law, Michelle Truskowski and Valerie Russell. He also leaves behind many cousins and good friends.
A small family only service will take place at Memorial Alternatives at 2432 Fuller Avenue N.E., Grand Rapids MI 49505 at 3:00 PM on January 21. A public Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, 3000 Monroe N.E., Grand Rapids MI 49505 earmarked for their Fountain Restoration.
