Valerie Athearn Obituary

With a saddened heart, we say ‘See You Later’ to our mom, sister, aunt, grandma, and great grandma, Valerie Jean Athearn.  Valerie was born in Petoskey, Michigan on December 19, 1955.  She is preceded in death by her father, Donald Lee Athearn, stepmother Elsie Athearn, stepfather Elwood Wade, mother Kathleen Nellie Recknall Wade, and her son, John Shoemaker.  She is survived by her siblings Linda (John) Wormell, Colleen (Dave) Russell, Donald (Jan) Athearn; half-siblings Anthony (Connie) Wade, Shane (Missy) Wade, Lori (Bill) Jensen, Aaron (Susan) Athearn, and Kelly Athearn; her children Kathy Shoemaker and Jack (Melissa) Shoemaker; her grandchildren Jacob Shoemaker, Toby Shoemaker, Tommy Shoemaker, MaLinda Johnston; great grandchild TJ Shoemaker II, aunts Sharon Budek and Cheryl Chisholm, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.  She also left behind her beloved dog, Bubba, who kept her chair warm during her hospital stays.

Valerie was the third of nine siblings/half-siblings and loved to have fun outside, getting into as much trouble as her siblings.  The family moved to Edmore in 1971 where she attended Montabella, participating in track, and Cedar Lake Academy schools.  As she grew up, she joined the GWRRA Chapter G2 (Edmore, MI), where she rode her Honda Gold Wing for many years.  The kids would go on family trips, especially their annual tradition attending GWRRA’s Midnight Ride and countless motorcycle rallies.  She loved sitting around campfires, pictures of wolves, and being outdoors.  If you found her indoors, she was likely enjoying crafting.  She loved a good spare rib, chocolate cake, Long John Silvers, and the occasional captain and coke or sea breeze.  Her homemade fried chicken, no bake cookies, meatloaf, and pumpkin pies were a favorite of her family and friends.

A hard worker, loved by her co-workers, she worked as a secretary/admin for years before going to Byrne Electric.  Her spunky attitude provided much humor, and her straightforward attitude was appreciated by many who would become longtime friends. She will be missed by all who knew her and memories of her celebrated for years to come.

She will be buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Six Lakes, MI with a Celebration of Life on April 27, 2024.  The Celebration of Life location and time will be shared closer to the date.
