Virene J. (Steenhagen) Squires

Virene Jeanne Squires (née Steenhagen), age 91, passed away peacefully at home with family, on March 28, 2025 in Kentwood, Michigan. Born on August 31, 1933, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Virene lived a long and meaningful life rooted in kindness, faith, and devotion to those around her.

Known affectionately as Vi, she was a woman of deep spirituality who lived by the Golden Rule. Her gentle nature and unwavering compassion left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Vi's warmth extended beyond family ties—she embraced others with unconditional love and formed lifelong friendships that enriched her journey.

Vi found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader who rarely missed her daily crossword puzzle. Her hands were rarely still; she delighted in baking for others and spent countless hours crocheting and creating beautiful needlework pieces that reflected her patience and care.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Squires; her parents Johannes and Wilhelmina Steenhagen; and her brothers Gerald (Evelyn) Steenhagen, Roger (Lois) Steenhagen, and John Steenhagen.

Vi is lovingly remembered by her step-son Michael (MaryJo) Baker; her sister Wilma (Bill) Osborn; her brother Ronald (Ethel) Steenhagen; as well as many nieces and nephews who cherished their time with her. Her memory will also be held dear by numerous lifelong friends whose lives were touched by her grace.

A memorial service to honor Vi’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, located at 7495 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49546. Friends and family are invited to gather for a time of fellowship beginning at 10:00 AM. The service will follow from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Vi’s legacy is one of quiet strength, enduring love, and heartfelt generosity. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested in Virene's honor. These may be made to Gentiva Hospice, for the loving care they provided in her final days, and sent to 625 Kenmoor Ave suite 115 Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
